On behalf of the city of Haifa I would like to thank the E.F.I for his meaningful gift . The EFI and the artist, Mr Keinan, has dedicated this beautiful piece of art to Haifa for a reason. Because Haifa is a unique symbol of the Great Spirit and strength of Israel.
I would like to share with you what the people of Haifa went through during this war: Imagine that you are sitting at home here in Brussels, or in Paris, or in Warsaw. Wherever you live. Everything is normal, and suddenly, out of nowhere… you are being hit by a vicious missile attack. Even now, more than a month later, we still struggle to understand this surreal situation. So one may ask: Why, for God’s sake, did Hezbollah choose Haifa as their main target? Is it because Haifa is a major academic and high tech center with universities, hospitals and the great Technion with their recent Nobel prize winners.? Or maybe because Haifa port is a potential gate for Syria, Jordan and Iraq to the Mediterranean? Which might it be another reason for peace? Is it because Haifa is the ultimate melting pot, where Jews, Muslims, Christians and Bahais co-exist peacefully, already for decades? Well, all of this is true. But the real reason that Haifa was attacked is because our lifestyle is the opposite of the way Islamic radicals perceive life. For them Haifa is the demon of progress, peace, and coexistence. For them, Haifa is a symbol of the world’s evolving modern, liberal and pluralistic spirit. Against their will, this war has only made us stronger. Now we all know that Israel is the front line of the modern world. Standing against the evils of Islamic extremism. Unfortunately, this was not the last act… To you, dear friends of Israel, I would like to say that your support is very important to us. But please remember: you are not only supporting Israel, you are actually supporting yourselves, your countries. Israel is the western spirit that Hezbollah attacks acting on behalf of Iran and Al Qaeda... If we were not there to defend what all of us here today represent, they would intensify their attacks on London and Madrid… Israel does the work. We defend our borders and our existence. But we also defend the spirit of the free world. Therefore, by supporting Israel, I think, you are defending yourselves, as well as us. And finally, back to Haifa. We always say that Jerusalem is the most beautiful City upon earth, but Haifa is the most beautiful city in Israel… Therefore, on behalf of Mayor Yona Yahav and the people of Haifa, I thank you for supporting Israel and we would like to express our gratitude by inviting each and every one of you to visit us and to feel, in person, the beauty of Haifa and the great human spirit that we represent. Thank you
